The common low-sounding voices that women announcers have is a result of society’s pressure to appeal to men who watch sports and to sound more like their male counterparts. What so many people fail to understand is commentators like Mowins and ESPN’s Doris Burke sound the way they do for a reason.

I just can’t stand the sound of your voice,” but as NFL reporter Andrea Kremer said, “I have no doubt that ‘hating the sound of her voice’ is code for ‘I hate that there was a woman announcing football.’” The article mentioned the most common response by men is “It has nothing to do with you being a woman. The New York Times released an article last year about how people generally respond to female commentators after a similar twitter outbreak occurred when Mowins covered her first nationally televised NFL game. (I will acknowledge that Jason Witten was also somewhat picked apart for his commentating debut on Monday but in a joking sense and never something people would change the channel over)
I can think of plenty of commentators whose voices irritate me, but I find it somewhat ironic how an overwhelming response was only present after a woman stepped into a major role in a male-dominated sport. You may not like Mowins’s voice, which is fine. I’m sure her vast playing experience got her that job… I would rather jump head first into a wood chipper than ever listen to a game commentated by Beth Mowins.
